My Content Mill Review

My goal is to break into freelancing. And hoo lordy, is there a lot to read. While I'm figuring this out, I'll be posting a list of sites I've found useful with a few bullets about why.

Textbroker--3.5 out of 5 cupcakes
  • Guaranteed Pay--even if you never hear from the client again, you will get paid. This is a big deal.
  • However, the Pay Sucks--1.4 cents a word, in fact. Yes. Ouch.
  • Confidence Builder--someone is paying you to write. You get money. For words. Yes, it's a pittance, but money for words! Woohoo! It's dipping your toe in the shallow end of a scarily wide ocean, and let's face it: oceans are scary. Some of us need to hang out in the wading pool for a bit.
  • No Byline Credit--unless you have a client nice enough to offer, none of this counts for a portfolio because it's unnamed work.
  • Safety net--a client cannot flat out reject you without at least one revision request, and you can appeal to Textbroker if you feel they rejected you unfairly. As I've never had to do this, I can't vouch for the process.
Elance--3 out of 5 cupcakes
  • I haven't had much like with Elance yet. I'm not very confident in submitting proposals, and I know that shines through. I'm also not the biggest fan of the bid system, but I'll update when I've spent more time there.
